GoodMaps is looking for a Senior UX Designer. This designer will be part of our agile team, the group responsible for creating, evolving, and maintaining GoodMaps products. Those products are GoodMaps Explore, the outdoor and indoor navigation app for people who are blind and visually impaired, and GoodMaps Studio, the mapping platform where venue owners can view and manage their building maps. The designer will also contribute to cutting-edge R&D projects happening behind the scenes.

For the Senior UX Designer to be successful, this person will need to be comfortable asking questions, learning on their feet, and applying their knowledge of UX to indoor navigation. GoodMaps is looking for someone with 6+ years of experience in User Experience or Product Design.

The GoodMaps mission is to improve the accessibility, safety, and productivity of indoor spaces. We believe that indoor digital maps can change the world. Whether helping individuals who are blind or visually impaired navigate independently, providing critical spatial information to first responders, tracking mobile assets, improving facility management, or helping you find your way around the local hospitals, GoodMaps paves the way. We use LiDAR and hyper-accurate infrastructure-free positioning technology to create digital maps and tie them to accurate navigation experiences and interactions through the GoodMaps platform.

UX and Technical Skills

The Senior UX Designer position is about understanding our users then delivering an experience that solves a problem for them that is GoodMaps mission-aligned.

Our successful candidate will have significant experience working with UX design teams and mentoring designers with less experience, while also being a self-starter who can work uncoached and take ownership of key projects and assignments, while escalating decisions as needed.

Key experiences in your portfolio:

  • Product development life cycle including concept, design, testing, release, and support
  • Performing wireframe and sketching (with pencil and paper, or digitally) to quickly generate ideas, prototypes, user flows, and mentoring other designers in how to create these assets
  • Leading collaboration with developers to design and refine product features
  • Facilitating collaboration with developers, users, customers, subject matter experts, and stakeholders and mentoring other designers
  • Expertise in the applications and execution of user research including user interviews, user surveys, managing data collection
  • Experience balancing user feedback, business needs, and technical limitations to deliver a great solution and user experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design principles and best practices, experience in graphic design to deliver designs that are both functional and beautiful
  • Cross-platform experience designing and delivering iOS and Android apps

Tools and practices that you have some experience with:

  • Sketch, Zeplin, Balsamiq, Draw.io, Storybook, or comparable tools
  • Jira, Confluence, and the Microsoft Suite preferred
  • Responsive web design and web design best practices
  • Knowledge of mobile screen resolution, artboard sizing, and exporting best practices

Bonus skills:

  • Knowledge of Atomic Design Methodology a bonus, but not required
  • Understanding of Design Thinking principles and human factors
  • Experience with designing and testing for accessibility on mobile and web is not required, but will need to be learned
    • VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA, JAWS
    • Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR), WCAG 2.1
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and web and mobile development concepts including components (this is not a developer position - you will not be coding - but a basic understanding of these languages helps our team communicate with developers)
  • Knowledge of our market and users is not required, but will need to be learned

  • Ability to build relationships with stakeholders and influence their decisions
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to defend designs
  • Emotional intelligence required for mentoring, coaching, and skilling up less experienced designers
  • Interest in navigation experiences for web and mobile, AR/VR experiences
  • Interest in designing accessible experiences and working with people with disabilities
  • An independent thinker who is inquisitively curious and highly creative
  • Comfortable and prepared to communicate early and often with your day-to-day team members
  • Ok with rapid shift in priorities and be ready to pivot or adjust plans quickly, fail fast and iterate
